Poker

Everyone loves a game of cards and there are plenty of different games to choose from. From blackjack to baccarat they are a good way to pass the time and bond in an enjoyable experience.

But perhaps the most well known form of card game is poker, whether you play card games regularly or you are one of those who just witness their execution in movies and television. Poker actually refers to a wide variety of games, which share an overall style – particularly in terms of the rules concerning betting and rankings of each hand. Various forms of poker include the variants Straight, Stud, Draw and Community, all of which share common themes but have their own histories and sub games.

Usually a game will open with a bet and then continues as players take their turns to the left. Each player will make their bet and the person to the left must either match this bet or they will have to fold, meaning they will have no further stakes in that hand. When it reaches a player who has the cards to match the bet they are also permitted to raise, which involves increasing the size of the original bet. Then once it has gone round in full, with each player either matching the bet, folding (or indeed raising the bet), the round is over. If everyone folds apart from one player, that player is permitted to take the winnings and does not have to show the other players what was included in his hand. If there is more than one who has not folded, then the cards are shown – if you happen to be the person with the best hand, you can take the pot.

Poker has developed a lot in recent years. The traditional image of the game involves a darkened room, with a single table underneath one ominous light. The players sit around it, with alcohol by their side and cigar smoke hanging in the air. Then the game begins.

That’s the stereotypical image, but in reality it is often a lot less dark and more fun. But the development we talk about here relates to the internet. Because of online casinos people can play poker at home, over the internet and without every coming face to face with the other players (if there are in fact other players – the player might be facing a random generator).
It shows that another way in which the internet has shaped the world, is through that of poker.
